RESULTS OF AN ANALOG BRAINSTORM SESSION WITH AIMEE...

MY PROJECT X FOCOULT :

In thinking about how my research topic related to the work of Focoult, I see a variety of overlaps. When Foucault's work discusses how knowledge gives one perception and based on this perception of what reality is, they conduct themselves consistent with what this reality is. Then others around this person, perceive how they act in their reality, later conducting themselves to match this creating a social norm.

However, when thinking of this in relation to the attention economy and the filter bubbles it places us into, our views on reality are distorted. I am given my reality as it is most profitable, and the person walking next to me is handed another reality. This creates a variety of social norms then, where people from different sides can not see or understand each other. But what is most important is that this knowledge that forms these individual realities, is being selected, curated and manipulated for the sole fact that we will spend more time reading or engaging rather than giving us ‘valuable’ knowledge. We are therefore conducting ourselves, creating social norms based on information and knowledge that has been refined. The absurd fact is that the ones in power feeding us this diluted set of knowledge are private companies with the fundamental goal of capital. These private companies use algorithms to decipher what portion of knowledge you will receive.

What I would like to achieve in this project, is to find a way for people to understand the reality that they share. The reality that exists in the physical world and environment around them. This reality is steady, as it is not personalised (yet) for each individual that walks through it. This would pass the power of knowledge back to the individual, rather than being in the hands of an algorithm. Through reconnecting with the shared reality, I hope that we can learn how to conduct ourselves in different ways with people we currently do not conduct ourselves with.
